CARPOOLING THE FRIENDLY SKIES

JETTING around the world on a private plane just ain't what it used to be. Not since that whole, you know, recession thing came along and spoiled all the fun. Now even President Obama talks smack about executives using bailout bucks to live the high life at 30,000 feet.
So what's a CEO to do? Fly commercial, shoulder to shoulder with the unwashed masses? Heavens no!
Instead, CEOs and the moderately to absurdly wealthy have a third option: the Share A Jet Exchange, launched last month as a kind of carpooling Web site for the private jet set.
Browsing the listings at Share A Jet Exchange, richies can find others like them who are willing to share.
"This is for people who want to show they are still using private aviation, but not doing it frivolously."
A flight from Teterboro, NJ, to Palm Beach, Fla., that would cost $12,000 on an eight-seater plane, for instance, is offered on the site for just $6,000 for four seats. The same family of four that is willing to share with another family can make the NY to LA run for the rock-bottom price of just $10,000.
Rome says the new service has already proved especially popular for parents chartering private jets to visit their kids at upstate sleep-away camps.
"They get to meet people of their own ilk," he says, "who might then become clients, business contacts or even lifelong friends."
